Welcome to WAGS Wiki

The objective of this Wiki is to provide a detailed and expanding knowledge base on all aspects of family history and genealogical research and education, for Western Australia.

It is envisaged that this Wiki will include: details of the information available; locations of the data, whether held in public or private repositories or collections; whether the data is in hard copy or digital format; and whether accessible online.

It is not intended that WAGS Wiki be an index or list of items available through commercial or online pay sites, nor a catalogue of items available in libraries, these organisations have their own catalogues.

We hope that, with the help of contributors, this Wiki will provide a road map for Western Australian research.

Genealogical and Family History Research

Public Repositories

Public repositories not only cover open collections held by Government jurisdictions, either Federal, State or Local, but also include information held by these jurisdictions which is not readily available to the public. These repositories include State & Local Government Cemeteries, State Hospitals, State Libraries, Local Libraries, State and Local Government Museums, State Schools, Universities and Colleges, and other government or semi-government institutions such as Public utilities.

Private Repositories

Private repositories or collections, include those held by institutions and other organisations such as: Religious organisations; Church Cemeteries; Public Corporations and Private Corporations; Funeral directors; Private Hospitals; Private Museums; Private Schools, Private Colleges and Private Universities; and private collections; all of whom may provide access to their records or collections to members of the public or to specialist researchers, on request.

Research Organisations

Other research and education organisations may also house public collections, including those run by non-government and not for profit organisations such as Genealogical and Family History Societies; Local History Societies or Groups; public research facilities and repositories including Local Studies Centers, usually associated with local libraries; volunteer organisations operating a publicly available facility or service; and purely online research facilities; among others.

Metropolitan Repositories and Country Repositories, may be public or private, and may also provide education about, and house significant collections of information and data of interest to family historians.

Genealogy and Family History Education

There are many groups in WA who provide education courses on how to go about genealogical or family history research and research methods.

Courses

The Western Australian Genealogical Society is a leader in this area and has a comprehensive Education Programme covering many aspects of research.

Many of the local studies libraries provide short courses on their own collections, and also have outside speakers on family history topics.

Country based societies run their own courses from time to time and draw on their local knowledge and talent as well as guest speakers.

Talks

In addition to specific courses on genealogy and family history, there are various discussion groups in the Perth Metropolitan area, and also in country WA, who conduct informal talks. Some of these groups meet on a regular basis, others are more ad-hoc, but all provide an interesting mix of topics.

Special Interests

Special Interest Groups provide a place to pursue specialist knowledge.

Many organisations hold courses on specialist topics, e.g. WAGS Special Interest Groups, WA Museums, The Royal Western Australian Historical Society, and others.
